Why is the United States above China?

Both teams won 40 golds. The United States had 44 silvers and China had 27, which resolves the tie for first place. The same rule reaches bronze for Italy and Germany: both had 12 golds and 13 silvers, while Italy had 15 bronzes to Germany’s eight.

Why does a total-medals table look different?

Great Britain’s 65 medals exceed France’s 64, but France won 16 golds to Great Britain’s 14. That puts France higher in this quiz. Adding every medal together answers a different question from ranking countries by gold medals.
